Touring in Europe (Luggage question)

Touring in Europe (Luggage question)

I’m touring in Europe next year for a week or possibly two. I ride a BMW XR but have yet to buy the hard luggage as I’m not sure I will need it.

I have always used Keriga soft luggage before but that was for when I was based in one place in Wales or Scotland. I never had the problem of moving on to a new location each day and leaving the bike unattended while I went to have lunch or doing a bit of sightseeing.

The countries I’ll be visiting will be German, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Italy.

My question is will the luggage be safe and are there countermeasures to keep soft luggage safe on the bike?

Bikes with flashing brake lights

Bikes with flashing brake lights

I was filtering on the M50 and N7 behind a bike with a flashing brake light and it really bugged me. Am I being a bit precious?
Seeing them as a car driver they appear and disappear relatively quickly, but tonight we were in convoy together for a while. OK, I could have eased up and let a gap build up, but that’s a different argument.
I’m inclined to think that car drivers wouldn’t pay any extra heed anyway, as 4-wheel slow commuting is normally just a zone-out mental space.
(10MHxxxx, with lots of front lights, if you know such a biker, ask him/her to think about it).

Motorcycle Marshals

Motorcycle Marshals

Looking for information on any Motorcycle Club that would be prepared to undertake marshalling and road closing (in conjunction with the local Gardai) for a St Patrick’s Parade on Sunday March 18th 2018 in the Leinster area, previous experience at a parade or similar event would be desired.
“Yes” the Parade is on Sunday the 18th and road closing will be from 1:30pm to 5pm approx.

Petrol and Diesel Price Hike

Petrol and Diesel Price Hike

Hi,

Can anyone shed light on the recent hikes in petrol and diesel in Ireland.
In the past three weeks there has been an 8 cent increase in the cost of both.
This increase is occuring on a nationwide level, as far as I can see.
On my recent travels I have noticed that the price is almost uniform at €1.27 for diesl and €1.39 for petrol. This is regardless of whether I am in Carlow, Cork, Waterford or Tipperary.
We are accustomed to some garages being dearer than others in specific areas, based upon supply and demand. There seems to be an element of price fixing going on at the moment.
It is too suspicious when all ptrol stations can agree a price regardless of their geographical location.

New to bikes

New to bikes

Hi all,

Decided to book my theory test for the bikes for Thursday !

(Actually what I’m doing is doing my theory for C licence and A licence in the same day, going to do my C licence first and get that and during that time the 6 months waiting period for the bike test will be ticking away !)

So I have the theory test Thursday, is this the same as the car test ? I downloaded a free theory test app on the android phone and selected motorcycle but don’t get an awful lot of questions for them,

Are there many specific questions on bikes or anything I should know for the theory test ?

(I should mention I’ve had the car licence for nearly 9 years and a bus licence nearly 4 years so not a complete newbie except for never riding a bike)

For IBT , I’ll be hoping to do IBT before riding any bike, hopefully when the weather improves and get some practice going with an instructor,

Do you folk have any recommendations for instructors who will provide the bike and gear at a good rate for IBT (full category A licence) and also hire of bike for test ?

My goal from this is hopefully get a motorbike alongside the car, a comfortable enough bike for commuting, any tips on this ?

And finally when I do go to buy a bike hopefully in spring, what would be a good used bike to go for that would be comfortable to use where I won’t be bent over ? (As much as I’d love something mad like a ninja, it’s not the right thing for me)

I’d appreciate any and all advice ! Thanks folks !
